Sismondi - Biennale d'Arte e Poesia Contemporanea - Rimini

The Place

Castel Sismondo

CASTELLO SISMONDO - Piazza Malatesta - Rimini >>>
Sigismondo Pandolfo Malatesta, Lord of Rimini and Fano from 1437 to 1446, erected the castle and named it with his own name, Castel Sismondo.
Its original structure has been celebrated with the coinage of the famous bronze and silver medals made by the sculptor Matteo de’ Pasti,
depicting it with its original wall fence and moat.

Above the entrance arch we can see a bas-relief representing the elephant shaped helmet, araldic symbol of the Malatestas.
Here Sigismondo invited a brilliant court of intellectuals and artists adhering with enthusiasm to the new humanistic thoughts and trends.

The Comune di Rimini is the current owner of Castel Sismondo since 1916, in the 70s it has started a complex work of restoration,
thanks to the fundamental contributions of Fondazione CARIM di Rimini, it became the most important exhibiting space of the county.
The place where great international exhibitions and important cultural events take place, today for the first time it will host a huge exhibition
of italian contemporary art on an international level.

Palazzo del Podestą

PALAZZO DEL PODESTA’ - Piazza Cavour - Rimini >>>
The residence of the Podestà (Governor) was erected in 1334 next to the Palazzo dell'Arengo (1204).
At ground floor there are three gothic arches; from those entrances the scaffolding ropes were tied for public hanging displays of the past.
The entrance on the short wing, is marked with the Malatesta's symbols.

On the first floor, there are five minor windows.
Later modifications were made in the XVIth century; the actual shape is due to a restoration work made in the first decades of the XXth century.

Today its wide rooms are used mainly for cultural and exhibiting events.
